COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team will host six games in Columbus and travel for seven contests in the 2013 regular season, head coach Nick Myers announced. The team, ranked 18th at the end of 2012, will take on four 2012 NCAA tournament squads and six teams that finished in the Top 20 last season.
Ohio State begins the regular season vs. Detroit Feb. 9 inside Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The Buckeyes, opening their campaign vs. the Titans for the third year in a row, are 4-0 all-time vs. Detroit, including an 11-6 victory in 2012. After a road game at Jacksonville Feb. 17 as part of the Moe’s Southwest Grill Classic – the first meeting between the teams – Ohio State will return home to host Marquette Feb. 23. The game marks the first for Marquette in program history as it joins the Division I lacrosse ranks this season.
The Buckeyes will travel to Penn State for a game March 2, part of the competition for the Creator’s Trophy, an annual traveling award among the three Big Ten schools that sponsor men's lacrosse (OSU, PSU, Michigan) that was established last year. The Nittany Lions won the inaugural title, including a 5-2 win over Ohio State in Columbus last season. The Buckeyes have won two of the last three games vs. Penn State in overtime.
The Buckeyes begin ECAC Lacrosse League play March 9 when they host Denver in Columbus. The Pioneers and Buckeyes met in Jacksonville, Fla., last season, with Ohio State prevailing, 10-9.
Three road games follow, as the Buckeyes head to Charlottesville to take on Virginia March 15 and then face Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., March 20. Ohio State hosted both NCAA tournament squads in Columbus last season.
The squad will then play at Bellarmine in the first of six-consecutive ECAC games to close out the regular season. The Buckeyes are 5-1 all-time vs. the Knights, including an 11-2 victory last year in Columbus.
Ohio State will host defending ECAC and NCAA champion Loyola March 30, marking the second consecutive year the Buckeyes will take on the defending national champs in Columbus. Ohio State suffered a close 8-7 loss on the road to the Greyhounds in 2012. Hobart comes to town the next week (April 6) for a league game. The Buckeyes prevailed over the Statesmen in overtime a year ago, 10-9, and have won the last three matchups vs. Hobart.
April 13 marks the first conference game between Ohio State and Michigan and will be played in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Wolverines are hosting Ohio State for the second year in a row because of the need to create home/away balance in the league schedule, which is set by the ECAC each year. The Buckeyes topped the Wolverines in the first meeting as varsity programs last year, 12-9, in the Battle at the Big House. The game is the second for the Buckeyes for the 2012 Creator’s Trophy.
Ohio State’s last regular-season road game is at Air Force April 20. The teams met in the Showdown in the Shoe last year, a 14-4 Buckeye victory. Ohio State leads the series with the Falcons, 17-11, and has won the last four games. The regular season closes April 27 when Ohio State hosts Fairfield. The Buckeyes and Stags met twice in 2012, splitting the games. Ohio State won in the regular season (8-3) before Fairfield won in the ECAC Tournament semifinals, 8-7. Ohio State is ahead in the series, 6-5, all-time.
Hobart will serve as host of the 2013 ECAC Tournament, set for May 3 and 5 in Geneva, N.Y. The Top 4 teams in the ECAC standings will earn a spot in the tournament.
All Ohio State home games this season will be played either indoors at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center or at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Because of construction, the Ohio State football spring game and Showdown in the Shoe are unable to be played in Ohio Stadium this year. The Showdown in the Shoe, held for the last five years, is expected to return to Ohio Stadium for 2014 and beyond.
