Sorensen Drafted Second Overall by NLL's Minnesota Swarm
Oct. 2, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Two-time Ohio State men's lacrosse captain Brock Sorensenwas the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft Monday in Toronto. Sorensen, who completed his Buckeye career in 2012, was selected by the Minnesota Swarm.
"Brock fits the bill for what we're looking for," Joe Sullivan, head coach of the Swarm, said. "We want character people and we want guys that are the best at their positions. Anyone who has watched film on Brock knows that he was the best defender and transition guy in the draft. We've been waiting to get him, and we got him. He's going to fit the mold well, and he's already bonded with many of our players."
Sorensen is the highest draft pick in team history. After selecting the Peterborough, Ontario, native, the team noted he "will bring a unique blend of size and speed to the Swarm's transition game ... [he] can run the floor and create scoring opportunities in addition to his ability to be a premiere stay-at-home defender with his 6-foot-5, 220-pound frame."
“It is a true honour to be selected by the Minnesota Swarm,” Sorensen said. “I have been playing since I was 3 years old and watching the greats of the game since I can remember. Now to say I will be playing alongside many of them is a dream come true.
Sorensen earned his degree in communication from Ohio State in the spring. He was a captain for the Buckeyes as both a junior and senior and played in 57 games as a Buckeye, contributing at nearly every position outside of goalie. He had 22 goals, three assists and 25 points in his career, along with 59 groundballs and 19 caused turnovers. Sorensen was the recipient of the team's 2012 Sportsmanship Award and was an Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honoree.
“We are proud to see Brock taking his game to the next level,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “Minnesota has drafted a great player and even better person in Brock Sorensen. I am sure he will bring a great deal of value to their organization moving forward.”
Sorensen is at least the ninth Buckeye selected in the NLL Entry Draft and the fourth first-round pick. In the first round, Joel Dalgarno was No. 7 overall by Toronto in 2009, Kevin Buchanan was drafted No. 11 by Minnesota in 2008 and Gary Bining was selected 13th by Colorado in 2006. Other Buckeyes drafted include Curtis Smith, a third-round pick for Colorado in 2003, Ricky Pages, a fourth-round choice by Minnesota in 2008 and Pat Myers, who was selected in the seventh round by Colorado in 2003. Josh Funk (second round) and Steve McKinlay (fourth round) both were drafted by Chicago in 2008.
“It will be great to represent The Ohio State University while playing at the next level as many have already done, including Buckeye greats Kevin Buchanan, Ricky Pages, Greg Bice, Anthony Kelly and Joel Dalgarno," Sorensen said. "I am pleased I will continue to contribute and gain recognition for the OSU lacrosse program.”
Sorensen's brother, Kyle, has played in 75 career NLL games since 2007 and is on the roster of the Washington Stealth for 2013.
