COLUMBUS, Ohio - Greg Bice and Kevin Buchanan - All-Americans for the Ohio State men's lacrosse team during their collegiate careers - will play in the Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game. The game , set for June 30 at FAU Stadium in Palm Beach County, Fla., starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN2. The event features a Young Guns vs. Old School format, with both Bice and Buchanan suiting up for the Old School squad, consisting of players who joined the league between 2001 and 2008.
Defenseman Bice, who has been in MLL since 2004, is a co-captain for the Ohio Machine and has seen action in six games this season, with 14 groundballs. He has played in 75 games in his MLL career and is a two-time winner of the league's Sportsman of the Year honor. This will be his fourth all-star appearance. He was a four-time letterwinner at Ohio State (2001-04) and was a second team All-American as a senior after leading Ohio State to a second-consecutive NCAA appearance. He was a three-time first team All-Great Western Lacrosse League honoree and was named the league's co-player of the year in 2004.
Buchanan, an attackman, will be making his second all-star game appearance after winning the MLL Freestyle Skills competition during the 2010 event. He joined the league in 2008 after four years with the Buckeyes (2005-08) and has played in 41 games, with 69 goals and 102 points, including 14 goals and 17 points this season with defending league champion Boston. The 2008 GWLL Player of the Year, a second team All-American as a senior and a three-time first team All-GWLL selection, he was a captain on the first Ohio State squad to reach the NCAA quarterfinals. Buchanan is third in Ohio State history with 175 points, ranking fifth in assists (78) and 10th in goals (97).
Defenseman Keenan Ochwat, who wrapped up his Ohio State career in May, was claimed by the Ohio Machine through the league's waiver wire process. Teams had the opportunity to place waiver claims on any college player not drafted in January's 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft and who registered for the MLL Player Pool between May 31 and June 7. Ochwat has not yet played with the Machine. He was a second team All-ECAC selection as a senior in 2012 after leading Ohio State with 28 caused turnovers, ranking 12th in the NCAA and second in the conference with 1.87 per game and was third on the squad with 34 groundballs. Ochwat and the Buckeye defense ended the year fourth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 7.2 goals a game. He saw action in 61 games as a Buckeye, starting 29 of the 30 he played over the last two seasons. He had 125 groundballs and 73 caused turnovers, along with three goals and two assists.
