Senior Spotlight: Joe Meurer and Greg Dutton

For the Ohio State men's lacrosse team, Saturday marks the final regular season home game of the season. The squad takes on Air Force at 1 p.m. in Ohio Stadium in an important ECAC Lacrosse League game, with the league title on the line. Prior to the matchup with the Falcons, the 10 members of the senior class will be recognized.

Leading up to the game, each member of the class will be featured online. Captains and Maryland natives Joe Meurer (Towson) and Greg Dutton (Timonium) wrap up the series. Read below for a Q&A with the seniors.

Joe Meurer, Defense
What has been your favorite moment of your senior year thus far?
Beating Michigan in the ‘Shoe in front of 30,000 people was definitely a highlight.

What are your plans after graduation?
I don’t have specific plans, but I hope to find a job with a financial services company and move back to the east coast.

What do you think your biggest challenge has been as team captain? How did you overcome it?
I’d say developing motivational tactics everyone would respond to. The other seniors helped me by empowering me to try some new things.

What has playing lacrosse taught you about teamwork?
It has taught me no matter what your role is on the team, everyone has a significant impact on making us become successful.

How do you go about setting your goals?
Our goal sheets we utilize at the beginning of the year really help me to be pensive and think about goals I want to set regarding the team, personal well-being, spiritual healing and my family. Expressing your goals in writing helps to attach a tangible meaning to them.

Do you have a saying or motto that you live your life by?
Always take care of your mother

What are you going to miss the most about playing lacrosse at Ohio State?
I’m going to miss being part of the special brand that is Ohio State day in and day out, but I’ll be content in knowing I’m a proud alumni.

What do you love most about lacrosse?
The brotherhood that surrounds you every day and working towards a common goal

If you weren't playing lacrosse, what would you be doing?
I would probably try and study abroad. I always wanted to do that.

What is one of your most memorable experiences as a Buckeye?
Playing in the NCAA tournament was an unbelievable experience and I hope to replicate that experience this year.

Greg Dutton, Goalie
What has been the best advice you have received?
Listen twice as much as you speak

Do you have any advice for incoming student-athletes?
If you plan on playing at a D1 level, be committed to putting in the time and effort.

What is one of your most memorable experiences as a Buckeye?
My most memorable experience as a Buckeye was winning the ECAC tournament title last year against Denver.

What do you love most about lacrosse?
I love the amount of creativity in lacrosse. Everyone has their own style of play, so it makes for a fun sport to watch and play.

What should goalies focus on when they are between the pipes?
Goalies should focus on the ball and directing the defense.

As team captain, how do you motivate the other players?
I try to motivate the other players by leading by example and exemplifying confidence on the field.

What are your plans after graduation?
To find a job in Columbus

Do you have any pregame rituals?
Not really, but I try to have the same game day routine every week.

What is the most rewarding part about being a Buckeye?
The most rewarding part about being a Buckeye is knowing the number of great athletes who have played here in the past.

What are you going to miss the most about playing lacrosse at Ohio State?
I’m going to miss game days and competing as a team.
