COLUMBUS, Ohio – Joe Meurer, a senior defenseman on the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team, is one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
“We are very proud Joe has been named as a finalist for this award,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “He is a selfless player who continues to put the team first and leads by example. This nomination speaks to Joe's commitment to Buckeye lacrosse and what he has accomplished both on and off the field.”
Finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 20 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through May 12. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Baltimore May 24-26.
Meurer, a native of Towson, Md., has started all nine games for the Buckeyes this season at close defense and has seven groundballs and eight caused turnovers. The Ohio State defense is allowing 8.67 goals a game on the year to rank 14th in the NCAA in team defense and has held opponents to seven or less goals four times, including in three of the last five games. Meurer was a 2014 Face-Off Yearbook Preseason First Team All-American after earning USILA Honorable Mention All-America and First Team All-ECAC accolades in 2013. He started all 17 games a season ago, leading Ohio State with 18 caused turnovers, and helping the squad to a Top 15 national ranking in team defense (8.82 goals allowed per game). A team captain for 2014, Meurer has played in 56 career games for the Scarlet and Gray and has 97 groundballs and 40 caused turnovers, along with two goals and 10 faceoff wins. Meurer was drafted by the Florida Launch in the second round of the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft with the 10th overall pick, the second-highest pick in Ohio State history. A finance major, he is a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten choice who is on pace to graduate this spring.
Meurer and Ohio State return to action Sunday with a game at Delaware at noon in Newark, Del. The Buckeyes will then host back-to-back games in Ohio Stadium, taking on Michigan in the Showdown in the Shoe April 12 and Air Force April 19. The squad closes the regular season April 26 at Fairfield before hosting the ECAC Tournament May 1 and 3 in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
