Team Gray won the intrasqaud game last week.
Feb. 2, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team will host Bucknell in a scrimmage at 2 p.m. Saturday on the turf field inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Admission is free to the game, the Buckeyes’ last tuneup before opening the regular season with two games next week.
The Buckeyes begin the 2012 slate when they host the University of Detroit at 7 p.m. Thursday night (Feb. 9) inside Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The team then hits the road for a game at Mercer at 1 p.m. Feb. 11 in Macon, Ga.
Winter Festival and Scarlet vs. Gray Scrimmage a Success
Last Saturday, the Buckeye lacrosse programs held the inaugural Lacrosse Winter Festival between Scarlet vs. Gray games for the men’s and women’s teams. The event included autographs, prizes, hardest shot and accuracy stations and a bounce house. In the men’s intrasquad game, an even matchup saw Team Gray come away with a 7-6 victory on a late goal as time was running out. A crowd of nearly 400 was on hand for the day of lacrosse inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Ohio State is coming off an 8-8 season and returns 26 letterwinners. Among the returnees are Matt Kawamoto, Logan Schuss and Joe Bonanni, who all were named preseason All-ECAC by Face-Off Yearbook. Kawamoto also picked up third team preseason All-America accolades from Inside Lacrosse. All four Buckeyes who earned All-ECAC honors at the end of 2011 are back – Schuss, Kawamoto (the league’s defensive player of the year), Bonanni and Dominique Alexander.
Ohio State’s roster includes six seniors, nine juniors, 14 sophomores and 15 freshmen. The squad has players from 12 states and two Canadian provinces. Ohio leads the way with nine, followed by eight Maryland natives and seven who call New York home. Four Buckeyes are from Pennsylvania, with two from Georgia, Illinois and Virginia and one from Washington, Michigan, Indiana, New Jersey and North Carolina. Three Buckeyes call British Columbia home, with two Ontario natives on the roster.
Lead the Way
Four seniors were selected team captains for the Buckeyes during the fall: Joe Bonanni (Harwood, Md.), Matt Kawamoto (Springfield, Va.), Mike Smail (Crofton, Md.) and Brock Sorensen (Peterborough, Ontario). Sorensen is in his second year as a captain for the squad.
Buckeyes vs. Bison
Ohio State and Bucknell have met seven times during the regular season. The teams last met in 2010, an 11-5 Bison win in Lewisburg, Pa. In Columbus in 2009, the Buckeyes won in overtime, 10-9 and the game in 2008 went to triple overtime, with Bucknell prevailing, 8-7. The 2007 game was also a one-goal contest, a 7-6 Bison win in Columbus.
Bucknell, ranked 12th in the preseason by the coaches and 14th in the media poll, was unanimously selected No. 1 in the Patriot League preseason poll. The squad was 14-3 a year ago, won both the Patriot League regular season and tournament championships and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second time in program history. The team, under Frank Fedorjaka, returns seven starters and 26 lettermen.
