Buckeyes Top Bellarmine, 13-2, on Senior Night

The Buckeyes led 6-1 after the first quarter and 8-2 at halftime. The squad shut out the Knights for the final 32:32 en route to the 13-2 victory. Schuss had a game-high five goals and seven points in the contest. Freshman Turner Evans and junior Nick Liddil each scored twice, with Evans adding an assist for a three-point game.
Ohio State will be on the road for its next three games, starting with a game at ECAC foe No. 5 Loyola at 1 p.m. Saturday in Baltimore, Md. The team will then travel for a conference game at Hobart April 7 before taking on Michigan, an affiliate member of the ECAC, April 14, televised live on BTN. The next week, Ohio State will host Air Force in the Showdown Shoe April 21 in Ohio Stadium. BTN will also televise the Buckeyes' game vs. the Falcons. The regular-season finale is April 28 at Fairfield.
Against Bellarmine, Schuss opened the scoring at 11:09 of the first quarter, assisted by sophomore Tyler Frederick. At 7:27 Evans extended the lead to 2-0 but Bellarmine's Colton Clark scored 1:27 later to draw the Knights within one (2-1). Ohio State then scored twice in the next 51 seconds to pull ahead, 4-1. Senior defenseman Keenan Ochwat forced a turnover and picked up the groundball. He passed to junior Patrick Toohey, who raced down the field and found Schuss for a score at 5:21. Sophomore Steve Knezick won the next faceoff for the Buckeyes, with junior Kevin Mack picking up the groundball. Mack led sophomore longstick middie Joe Meurer into the zone, who scored his first career goal at 5:09. Schuss scored unassisted at 3:38 for a 6-1 Buckeye advantage. Shots were 11-7 in favor of the Buckeyes in the quarter, with Dutton making three saves.
Ohio State outscored Bellarmine, 3-1, in the second quarter to carry an 8-2 lead into halftime. Schuss, Evans and Frederick all tallied unassisted in a 5:03 span from 10:33-5:28. Bellarmine scored the final goal of the quarter at 2:32 when Michael Ward tallied, ending a scoreless streak of 18:28. Bellarmine outshot the Buckeyes, 8-6, in the stanza. Dutton had three saves in the Buckeye cage.
The Buckeyes shut out Bellarmine in the second half, adding five goals en route to the victory. Liddil scored, assisted by Schuss at 11:13 of the third and senior Mike Smail found junior Dominique Alexander for a goal at 9:36. Schuss again set up Liddil at 8:20, with his goal scored over the shoulder with his back to the goalie. The teams combined for 13 shots in the stanza, with Ohio State ahead, 8-5. Dutton had four stops, with Dillon Ward making three saves for the Knights.
Evans set up Schuss for a man-up goal at 9:57 of the fourth quarter and the final goal was scored by senior Eddie Bambino at 2:29 as he drove the net. Shots were 7-6 in favor of the Knights in the quarter. Dutton had three saves, with sophomore Scott Spencer making one save as he closed out the game. Ward had two saves in the BU cage.
Ohio State outshot Bellarmine, 31-27, in the contest. Dutton played the first 56:20 and had 13 saves. Spencer played the last 3:40 and had one save. For the Knights, Ward had six saves in all 60 minutes.
The Knights won 12-of-18 faceoffs and each team had 29 groundballs. Dutton, senior Joe Bonanni and sophomore Shawn Kaplan (who won four faceoffs) each had three groundballs to lead Ohio State. Ochwat led the Buckeyes with three of the squad's 10 caused turnovers. Ohio State was 24-for-26 on clears, holding Bellarmine to 13-of-18.
