COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sean Romeo, a junior goalie on the No. 9-ranked Ohio State men’s hockey team, was named Big Ten First Star of the Week after leading the squad to a sweep of then-No. 7 Minnesota last weekend. The Cary, North Carolina, native allowed just one goal in each game, as Ohio State posted a 2-1 victory in overtime and a 4-1 win.
Among NCAA goalies who played more than one game last week, Romeo ranked first with a .97 gaa and .971 save percentage, making 33 saves on 34 shots in each game vs. the Gophers.
Friday, Romeo allowed just one third period goal as Ohio State won 2-1 in overtime. He had seven saves in the first period, stopped all 16 shots he faced in the second and had 10 saves on 11 shots in the third. Saturday, he had eight first period saves and stopped 12-of-13 shots in the second. In the third, he saved all 13 shots he faced, including four on the penalty kill to keep the game tied before the Buckeyes went ahead 2-1 with 5:13 remaining. The one-goal lead held until Ohio State scored twice in the final 1:12 with the Gopher net empty. Romeo and the Buckeyes were 5-for-5 on the penalty kill in each game.
On the year, Romeo is in the Top 10 nationally and second in the Big Ten with a 1.93 goals-against average and .928 save percentage.
The Buckeyes, 10-4-4 overall, wrapped up the first half of their schedule with the sweep of the Gophers, entering break in second place in the Big Ten with a 5-4-1-0 record. The squad leads the NCAA on the penalty kill (.928) and ranks fifth nationally in scoring defense, allowing 2.11 goals per game. Tanner Laczynski leads the Buckeyes with 15 assists and 23 points, while Mason Jobst has a team-best nine goals and is second with 18 assists. Matthew Weis is second with 11 helpers and third with 16 points.
Ohio State will return to action with a home series vs. Niagara. The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 29 and 8 p.m. Dec. 30 in Value City Arena.
