Fritz and McCormick Earn Big Ten Three Star Awards

COLUMBUS, Ohio –Tanner Fritz and Max McCormick, junior forwards on the Ohio State men’s hockey team, have been named the Big Ten First and Second Star of the Week, respectively, the Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday. The duo helped lead Ohio State to a series sweep of Niagara, moving the squad to 6-1 in its last seven games.

Fritz led the Buckeyes and the Big Ten with six points over the weekend, tying for second nationally in points in his first series back since missing five games with an injury. Friday, he had a point on all four Ohio State goals in the team’s 4-1 victory with a goal and three assists. Saturday, he had two assists in the Buckeyes’ 6-1 win. He was a league-best +5 on the weekend and blocked five shots. Friday was the second four-point game of his career and his third three-assist day. Fritz, from Grande Prairie, Alberta, has eight points, on one goal and seven assists, in five games this season.

McCormick was the only NCAA player to score four goals last week, tallying twice in each win against Niagara. He also had an assist Friday for a three-point outing and was +4 on the weekend. Friday was the second multiple-goal game of his career and first since Jan. 28, 2012. McCormick leads Ohio State with 12 points this year and is tied for first with five goals, ranking second with seven assists. He has a point in all but two games this season.

Ohio State (6-4-0, 0-0-0 B1G) closes a seven-game homestand when it hosts Canisius this weekend in Value City Arena. Puck drop both nights is set for 7:05 p.m.
