COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior Curtis Gedig has been named captain of the 2013-14 Ohio State men's hockey squad and will be joined by juniors Ryan Dzingel and Tanner Fritz, who will wear the alternate captain "A" on their sweaters. The trio was selected after a team vote.
"We feel really good about the three players who will be leading the team this year," Steve Rohlik, in his first year as the Buckeyes' head coach, said. "The maturity all three show both on and off the ice and the way they carry themselves is an example of how we want each member of our team to represent Ohio State."
Gedig, who leads all returning Buckeyes with 100 career games played, looks forward to wearing the C for the Scarlet and Gray.
"It is an honor and a privilege and I could not be more excited about the responsibility,"Gedig, a West Kelowna, British Columbia, native, said. "I have never been more eager for a hockey season to start. It really helps my confidence knowing the guys trust and believe in me, which will carry over on to the ice."
Gedig will be wearing a letter for a second-consecutive year after serving as captain for a majority of the 2012-13 season. The defenseman has posted 41 points at Ohio State and is coming off a career-high three goals and 15 points last year. A 2009 New Jersey draft pick, Gedig was also voted 2013 Best Defensive Player by his teammates.
Wheaton, Ill., native Dzingel will serve as an alternate captain for the 2013-14 Buckeyes. He wore the captain's "C" on numerous occasions during his sophomore season in 2012-13. Dzingel was the team's leading scorer the past two campaigns, totaling 38 points last year to tie for third among all conference players. The Ottawa Senators draft choice enters his junior campaign with 23 goals, 39 assists and 62 points in 73 games as a Buckeye. Dzingel was an honorable mention All-CCHA selection last season, as well as an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten choice.
Fritz will join Gedig and Dzingel as the third Buckeye to wear a letter during the 2013-14 campaign. Fritz wore the captain's "C" on a few occasions last season, but will be serving as a full-time alternate captain this year. The Grande Prairie, Alberta, native comes into the 2013-14 season after claiming the CCHA scoring title last year when his 32 points in league action earned him a spot on the All-CCHA Second Team. He has 17 goals, 34 assists and 51 points in his 74-game Ohio State career, with a team-best 26 assists a season ago. Fritz is a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
The Buckeyes open the regular season, their first as a member of the Big Ten Conference, at Value City Arena Oct. 11 with a non-conference game against Miami. Ohio State and Miami will meet in Oxford Oct. 12 for the second game of the weekend series.
