COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior forward Ryan Dzingel and freshman goaltender Christian Frey, have been named Big Ten Stars of the Week, the Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday. Dzingel was tabbed the league’s first star after posting an NCAA-high six points in the Buckeyes’ sweep of Penn State last weekend. Frey earned a second consecutive weekly award after stopping 70-of-73 shots in the series vs. the Nittany Lions.
Dzingel, from Wheaton, Ill., had three goals and three assists for six points in the two games vs. Penn State combined. In the Buckeyes’ 5-1 win Friday, he had two goals (including a shorthanded tally) and an assist. Saturday, he had a goal and two assists in the second period as the Buckeyes turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead en route to a 5-2 win. He was +4 in the matchup, with a +3 mark Friday.
A Wheaton, Ill., native, Dzingel leads the Big Ten with 17 goals and 36 points this season and is fourth nationally with 1.50 points per game.
Frey allowed just three goals in the Buckeyes’ sweep of Penn State, making 70 saves for a .959 save percentage. Friday, he stopped a career-high 46 shots in a 5-1 win. Saturday, he had 24 saves, including stopping the last 20 shots he faced as the Buckeyes came from a 2-0 deficit to win 5-2.
Frey, an Arlington, Texas, native joined the Ohio State program for the spring semester, is 5-1 this year, with a .936 save percentage and 2.19 save percentage.
In all, Ohio State has 10 Big Ten Star of the Week honors this year. Dzingel is now a three-time selection (Dec. 31, Jan. 14, Feb. 4) and Nick Oddo (Oct. 29, Dec. 31) and Frey (Jan. 28, Feb. 4) are two-time honorees. The other Buckeyes who have been recognized are Tanner Fritz (Nov. 12), Max McCormick (Nov. 12) and Logan Davis (Nov. 19).
The Buckeyes (14-9-1, 4-5-1-0 B1G) play at Michigan State this weekend. The teams will meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday on BTN and at 4 p.m. Saturday on FS Detroit+ and SportsTime Ohio. Both games will also be available through BTN2Go and will have Ohio State/IMG Radio coverage on 1460 AM in Columbus and online through Buckeye Vision.
