Men's Hockey Completes Sweep of Notre Dame, 5-3

COLUMBUS, Ohio - R.J. Umberger tallied a goal and three assists and Paul Caponigri recorded two goals and an assist, to lead the Ohio State men's hockey team to a 5-3 win over Notre Dame at Value City Arena. The win completed a two-game weekend sweep of the Irish for the Buckeyes, who won the series-opener, 5-2.
With the win, the Buckeyes move to 14-10-2 overall, 11-7-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Irish fall to 6-21-5, 3-14-4 in conference play. The Buckeyes are 3-0-1 vs. Notre Dame this season.
The Irish got on the board first with an Aaron Gill power-play goal 5:14 into the period, but Ohio State scored the last three goals of the first period for a 3-1 lead.
Umberger scored a power-play tally at the 6:32 mark, assisted by Caponigri and Jean-Francois Dufour, for the Buckeyes' first score. Scott May tallied at the 13:49 mark for Ohio State, assisted by Dufour and Umberger.
Caponigri scored two-consecutive power-play goals to put Ohio State up, 4-1. Umberger and Doug Andress posted the assists on both Caponigri goals. His tallies came at 17:12 in the first period and 9:03 in the second stanza.
Ryan Dolder scored on the power play 9:44 into the second period to get the Irish within two (4-2). Ohio State's Luke Pavlas tallied his second goal of the season, assisted by Miguel Lafleche, at the 14:25 mark for the Buckeyes' final score.
Notre Dame's Dan Carlson posted the only goal of the third perid when he tallied at the 13:44 mark. Ohio State's Dave Steckel did not record a point in the game, ending his team-best scoring streak at 15 games. He has been held scoreless in just five of 22 games this season.
The Buckeyes' Mike Betz stopped 29-of-32 Notre Dame shots in the win, while his counterpart, Tony Zasowski, made 24 saves on 29 shots in the game.
The Buckeyes converted 3-of-7 power-play opportunities. Notre Dame was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
Ohio State next competes Feb. 9-10 when they play a home-and-home series with Miami. The squads will play at 7:35 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 in Columbus, Ohio, before traveling to Oxford, Ohio for a 7:35 p.m. tilt Saturday, Feb. 10.
