Jan. 28, 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Christian Frey, a freshman goaltender on the Ohio State men's hockey team, was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week, the Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday. Frey stopped 36-of-37 shots he faced to lead Ohio State to a 3-1 road win over No. 9-ranked Wisconsin Saturday.
A native of Arlington, Texas, Frey stopped all 17 shots he faced in the first period and added 10 more saves in the middle stanza as the Buckeyes came from behind for a 2-1 lead. He then stopped all nine shots he faced in the third period as the Buckeyes held to their one-goal lead until an empty-net goal with 12 seconds left sealed the win.
Frey, who joined the Ohio State program for the spring semester, is 3-1 this year, with a .923 save percentage.
In all, Ohio State has eight Big Ten Star of the Week honors this year. Nick Oddo (Oct. 29, Dec. 31) and Ryan Dzingel (Dec. 31, Jan. 14) are two-time honorees. The other Buckeyes who have been recognized are Tanner Fritz (Nov. 12), Max McCormick (Nov. 12) and Logan Davis (Nov. 19).
The Buckeyes host Penn State in Value City Arena this weekend. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. ET Friday (Buckeye Vision) and at 2 p.m. ET Saturday (ESPNU/Watch ESPN). Ohio State/IMG Radio will have the call on 1460 AM in Columbus and online through Buckeye Vision both nights.
Script Ohio on Ice will be performed during the first intermission Friday. The game Saturday will be the celebration of 50 years of Ohio State hockey and the All-Buckeye Team will be revealed during the first intermission.
