Men's Hockey Edged by No. 9 Miami, 2-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's hockey team was defeated by No. 9 Miami, 2-1, Sunday at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. The loss ended the Buckeyes' unbeaten streak at six games as the team moved to 9-10-5 overall and 7-7-4 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association games. Miami improved to 18-8-2, 13-5-2 in the league.
Freshman goaltender Joseph Palmer (Yorkville, N.Y.) made 30 saves, the fifth time this season he has made 30 or more saves in a game, but fell to 9-8-4.
Ohio State and Miami exchanged goals early in the first period for a 1-1 tie at the first intermission. The RedHawks got on the board first at 2:57 when Ryan Jones jammed the puck past Palmer during a scramble in front of the net. Jones was assisted by Dane Hetland and Nathan Davis.
The Buckeyes responded just minutes later when a Miami player knocked down a clearing attempt in the RedHawk zone. Junior forward Tommy Goebel (Parma, Ohio) picked up the lose puck just within the blue line, turned toward the net and fired a slap shot into the left side at 5:06 for his eighth goal of the season.
Palmer made a total of 15 saves in the first period, including several stellar stops during a :54 5-on-3 Miami advantage late in the stanza in which three senior defensemen were in the penalty box. The Buckeyes successfully killed off all three MU power play opportunities in the first period.
The teams skated to a scoreless second period with Palmer making 11 saves, including three sprawling saves in the final minute of the stanza with a five-man pileup in the right corner of the net.
The RedHawks scored early in the third period to take the lead for the second time in the game. Raymond Eichenlaub rifled a shot from the left circle at 1:38 on a pass from Jared Palmer to move the score to 2-1. Ohio State had four power play opportunities in the period and pulled Joseph Palmer for an extra skater with :56 remaining in regulation, but was unable to capitalize on the man-advantages.
Miami finished the game with a 32-27 advantage in shots. The Buckeyes were 0-of-6 on the power play with a perfect 4-of-4 mark on the penalty kill. RedHawk netminder Jeff Zatkoff had 26 saves and is 10-4-1.
Ohio State will next travel to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., to face No. 17 Lake Superior State in a CCHA series Jan. 26-27. Games begin at 7:35 p.m. Friday and 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.
Ohio State and Miami concluded their regular-season meetings with the RedHawks leading 2-1-2.
Tommy Goebel is now tied for the led for Buckeye goals with Mathieu Beaudoin at eight each.
Goebel extended his point streak to six games. He has two goals and six assists in those games.
Domenic Maiani ended his point streak at five games. Matt Waddell ended his at four games.
Defensemen Sean Collins and Jason DeSantis were both held without a point for the first time since Dec. 8 - a span of six games. It was only the fifth game all season both Collins and DeSantis were not on the score sheet.
