Jan. 3, 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Matthew Weis, a senior forward on the No. 8-ranked Ohio State men’s hockey team, was named Big Ten Second Star of the Week after posting two goals and three points in the Buckeyes’ sweep of Niagara.

Friday, Weis had an assist on Tanner Laczynski’s gamewinning goal with seven seconds left in regulation that lifted the Buckeyes to a 3-2 victory. Saturday, he scored two power play goals. His first put the Buckeyes up 2-0 in the first period (the gamewinner in an eventual 4-1 win) and his second gave Ohio State a 3-1 advantage in the second stanza. Weis was part of the Buckeye penalty kill that was 5-for-6 in the series, including 4-for-4 (with a major) in game two.

Saturday was the fourth two-goal game of Weis’ career and his second this season after scoring two goals at UConn Nov. 10. He is on a four-game point streak (2g, 4a, 6p) and has a point in six of his last seven games. On the year, he has a 7-12-19 line. Weis picked up the 100th point of his Buckeye career Dec. 9 and now has 35-69-104 totals in 119 games for the Scarlet and Gray.

The Buckeyes, 12-4-4 overall, are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games. The squad plays its next two series on the road, facing Michigan State at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday before taking on No. 14 Penn State at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12 and 7 p.m. Jan. 13. A week off follows before a four-game homestand when the Buckeyes will host Michigan Jan. 26-27 and Michigan State Feb. 2-3.
