COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie against No. 20 Quinnipiac at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn., Friday night. Senior goalie Brady Hjelle totaled 31 saves, while sophomore forward Matt Johnson scored the team's lone goal.
Ohio State moves to 1-1-1 overall, while Quinnipiac is now 2-1-1. The two squads face off Saturday at 4 p.m. to conclude the series.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie at the end of the first period. Ohio State totaled six shots on goal and Hjelle tallied eight saves before the first intermission.
The Bobcats opened scoring at 9:45 in the second when Matthew Peca put the puck past Hjelle for an unassisted goal. Quinnipiac maintained the one-goal advantage throughout the rest of the stanza and stopped six Buckeye shots. Hjelle totaled nine saves at the end of the period.
Ohio State produced the equalizer halfway through the third period, scoring at 10:55. Johnson picked up his second goal of the season with the assist to Tyler Lundey. The helper was the freshman's second of the year. Hjelle stopped 13 Bobcat shots in the third, while the Buckeyes totaled 11.
Both defenses proved to be impenetrable in the overtime period as Ohio State finished with two shots to Quinnipiac's one.
The Buckeyes were outshot, 32-25, in the game. Ohio State went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Bobcats were 0-for-3.
Hjelle's save total marks the second game this season and fourth as a Buckeye with 30 or more stoppers.
The tie is the first in the all-time series. Quinnipiac leads with a 4-3-1 record.
