COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 8 Ohio State men's gymnastics team will compete in the first of three preseason meets at 2 p.m. Saturday in the annual Scarlet & Gray Intrasquad held at the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility.
"This will be the first time before the season starts in January that the team will perform in front of judges," Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov said. "We are still in the process of finalizing and refining our routines. Our main goal is to have a good hit percentage and see where we stand."
The Buckeyes, who enter the 2013 season ranked eighth in the College Gymnastics Association preseason coaches' poll, will be divided into two squads selected by junior captains and returning All-Americans Kris Done and Misha Koudinov, who will choose the Scarlet team and Gray team, respectively. Four to five gymnasts will compete on all six Olympic events in front of judges and fans to simulate the environment at regular-season competitions.
Among the Ohio State gymnasts competing Saturday include returning All-Americans Michael Newburger, and Danny Steiner along with Done and Koudinov. Saturday's exhibition also marks the debut meet for the freshmen team members.
Following this weekend's action, the Buckeyes travel to Cincinnati for their second exhibition meet at the 2012 Cup Invitational held at 7 p.m. Dec. 15, followed by an Alumni Exhibition at the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility at 2 p.m. Jan. 12.
Saturday's meet is open to the public, and admission is free.
