Columbus, Ohio - Four members of Ohio State men's gymnastics team completed day one of the P&G Championships Thursday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
After the first day of senior competition, all-arounders Sean Melton (82.900) and Alec Yoder (81.000) sit in seventh and 11th place, respectively. Sean Neighbarger, a freshman, had the second-highest score of any athlete who competed in five events with a 66.550.
"Alec and Sean got off to a bit of a slow start," Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov said. "They picked it up really well on parallel bars, high bar and floor, but overall very proud of the guys and the way they handled the adversity they faced."
In the junior realm, Max Andryushchenko had a steady day one and sits in fifth place out of 17 all-arounders with a score of 76.200. Andryushchenko's 13.850 on rings was the highest score by any junior competitor in the event.
"It was a good start for first timers from our team (Neighbarger and Andryushchenko)," Sharipov mentioned. "We're going to get back in the gym on Friday and figure things out. It's not a sprint, it's a race. The guys are going to go strong and make Buckeye Nation proud."
Melton's best finish of the day was on the parallel bars with a 14.300 to rank fifth in the competition. Yoder's pommel horse readout of 13.800 was the eight highest score in the event, and Neighbarger's vault of 14.000 tied for 10th.
