COLUMBUS, Ohio - Three incoming, two current and one former member of the Ohio State men's gymnastics team participated in the first day of competition at the 2013 P&G Championships Friday night at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
Former Buckeye Brandon Wynn led the four Ohio State gymnasts competing at the senior level, finishing seventh in the all-around with an overall score of 86.700. The 2010 and 2011 U.S. Champion on rings, Wynn earned Top 10 finishes on three events including a first-place finish (15.750) on his signature event. The Voorhees, N.J., native also placed sixth on high bar (15.050) and eighth on parallel bars (14.700).
Incoming freshman Sean Melton finished the night in 16th place, also notching Top 10 finishes on three events. The Orlando, Fla., native placed third on parallel bars (15.050), eighth on high bar (14.650) and ninth on pommel horse (14.000) en route to earning an overall score of 85.000.
Sophomore Danny Steiner rounded out the top Buckeyes, ending the night in 24th place with an overall score of 79.050. The rising junior earned Top 25 finishes on three events, scoring 14.500 on vault, 13.750 on floor exercise and 13.700 on parallel bars.
Redshirt junior Michael Newburger competed as an event specialist on pommel horse, scoring 14.900 to finish in third-place overall with one day of competition remaining.
At the junior level (17-18), incoming freshmen Jacob Dastrup and Andrew Rickly finished the first day of all-around competition in first and third place, respectively. Dastrup completed the meet with Top 5 finishes on all events, including first-place finishes on floor exercise (14.900) and pommel horse (13.950) and second-place finishes on vault (14.650) and high bar (13.850). Dastrup currently leads the 17-man field with an overall score of 84.450.
Rickly also concluded the first day of competition with two first-place finishes. The Lewis Center, Ohio, native placed first on parallel bars (13.900) and high bar (13.950) in addition to Top 5 finishes on floor exercise and pommel horse. Altogether, Rickly earned an all-around score of 81.250.
The 2013 P&G Championships conclude with the second and final day of competition Sunday. The senior division will compete at 1 p.m. ET on NBC, while the junior division will compete at 6:30 p.m. ET.
