Buckeyes Announce 2013 Schedule
Aug. 15, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's gymnastics team announced its 2013 schedule today. The Buckeyes will host three meets, including a home meet against Michigan for the first time in three seasons, in addition to traveling for seven contests.
"The schedule is going to be a little bit busy during the beginning of the year," said coach Rustam Sharipov. "We have six weekends in a row where we're competing. Our goal this year is to be in the Top 3 in the Big Ten and as long as we can stay healthy we should be in a good position to do that."
Similar to last year's schedule, the Buckeyes will participate in three preseason exhibitions starting with the annual Scarlet and Gray intrasquad at the team's training facility at Steelwood on Dec. 8. The team will then travel to Cincinnati to take part in The Cup Invitational on Dec. 15 before returning home to Steelwood to compete in the alumni exhibition on Jan. 12.
The squad begins its regular season schedule one week after the alumni exhibition, traveling to the Windy City Invitational on Jan. 19 for the third consecutive season. At last year's meet, the Buckeyes claimed first place earning the team's first title at that competition since 2006.
Ohio State will then travel to Dallas, Texas to participate in the Metroplex Challenge on Jan. 25 against Oklahoma, Illinois, Iowa, Texas and Texas A&M. Illinois finished the 2012 season as national champions, while Oklahoma finished as national runner-up for the second straight year. Overall, three of the five teams Ohio State will face in Texas ended the past year ranked in the Top 11 nationally.
Following the Metroplex Challenge, the Buckeyes will compete against Penn State in State College, Pa. on Feb. 2 before heading to the Winter Cup, a USA Gymnastics Event, held in Las Vegas from Feb. 7-9.
Ohio State will then open its home schedule against rival Michigan at St. John Arena on Feb. 16, also remaining at home for a meet against Illinois on Feb. 23 and for a Senior Day match-up against UIC on March 9.
Following Senior Day, the Buckeyes will travel to Norman, Okla. on March 23 to compete against Oklahoma in their final meet before the start of postseason competition.
The 2013 Big Ten Championships will be hosted by Minnesota in St. Paul, Minn. on April 5-6. Each team in the Big Ten Conference ended last season ranked in the Top 11 nationally, with Illinois, Penn State and Michigan advancing to the 2012 NCAA team finals.
After the conference championships, Ohio State will have two weeks to prepare for the 2013 NCAA Championships April 19-21 in State College, Pa., hosted by Penn State. The three-day championships kickoff with two qualifying sessions Thursday followed by the team finals Friday. The 2013 national championships conclude with the individual finals Saturday.
