COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three incoming, two current and one former member of the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team are set to compete at the 2013 P&G Championships Aug. 15-18 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Redshirt junior Michael Newburger, sophomore Danny Steiner, incoming freshmen Jacob Dastrup, Sean Melton and Andrew Rickly and former Buckeye Brandon Wynn will all participate in the four-day competition that serves as the USA Gymnastics National Championships.
“We have three future Buckeyes, two current Buckeyes and one former Buckeye competing at the U.S. Championships,” Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov said. “I believe this group is a great representation of our team and we are looking forward to a great weekend in Hartford.”
Newburger, a native of Austin, Texas, will be making his first career appearance at the P&G Championships, having qualified for the elite competition after claiming the 2013 NCAA Championship on pommel horse. The two-time All-American also captured the 2013 Winter Cup pommel horse title to go along with three additional individual event titles throughout 2012-13.
Steiner, a two-time All-American on floor exercise, will also be making his first career appearance at the P&G Championships. The Mesa, Ariz., native qualified after finishing ninth overall in the all-around at the 2013 U.S. Men’s National Qualifier July 11-14 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The rising junior finished second on floor exercise and 10th on high bar in his first collegiate all-around competition.
A native of Lindon, Utah, Dastrup qualified to compete this weekend after finishing third in the all-around at the 2013 Junior Olympic National Championships. A three-time U.S. Championships competitor at the junior level, Dastrup placed seventh on pommel horse at the 2011 U.S. Championships in St. Paul, Minn.
Melton, a native of Orlando, Fla., is a three-time junior level competitor at the U.S. Championships. A member of the U.S. Senior Men’s National Team, Melton placed third in the all-around at the 2012 U.S. Championships in St. Louis, Mo., after posting Top 10 finishes on all six events including a first-place finish on high bar.
A Lewis Center, Ohio, native, Rickly advanced to the P&G Championships after placing third overall in the all-around in the Junior Division at the U.S. National Qualifier. A two-time junior competitor at the U.S. Championships, Rickly tied for third on parallel bars and finished seventh on rings in 2012.
Wynn, a member of the U.S. Senior Men’s National Team, will compete for his third U.S. Championship on rings. The Voorhees, N.J., native captured consecutive titles in 2010 and 2011. Wynn finished 14th overall in the all-around at the 2012 U.S. Championships, highlighted by a second-place finish on rings and an eighth-place finish on parallel bars.
The 2013 P&G Gymnastics Championships will be broadcast on both NBC and NBC Sports Network. Day one of men’s competition begins Friday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network followed by the second and final day of competition at 1 p.m. ET Sunday on NBC.
