COLUMBUS, Ohio - Five members on the Ohio State men's gymnastics team will compete at the 2014 U.S. National Qualifier Saturday at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Rising seniors Alex Nork and Drew Moling, juniors Jake Martin and Alex Johnson and rising sophomore Andrew Rickly will all participate in the elite competition.
The men's national qualifier presents the last opportunity for the top male gymnasts in the country to qualify for the 2014 P&G Championships held Aug. 20-24 in Pittsburgh, Pa., where the U.S. national team will be announced. The 2014 national team will then prepare to compete at the Pan American Championship in Canada in the end of August and for the World Championships in China at the end of September.
The elite competition is broken down into two sessions at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET. A minimum of 14 gymnasts will advance to the U.S. Championships based on the National Points Ranking System, and additional athletes may be selected as needed to complete the 42-man U.S. Championships field.
Martin and rising sophomore Sean Melton - who were both honored as All-Americans last April at the 2014 NCAA Championships - have already qualified for the national championships next month. Melton became the first freshman in school history to earn four All-American awards, including a third-place finish in the all-around competition, while Martin was the NCAA runner-up on high bar. Melton, the 2014 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, will compete for Team USA this Friday and Saturday in Mexico at the Pan American Olympic Festival in Guadalajara.
