May 16, 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michael Newburger, a member of the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team, has been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large team, CoSIDA announced. With the honor, Newburger moves on to the Capital One Academic All-America team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
The award marks the third career academic honor for Newburger, who also earned his first Capital One Academic At-Large First Team honor last year.
A team captain on the men’s gymnastics team, Newburger concluded his career as a two-time All-American after claiming the 2013 NCAA Championship on pommel horse (the second gymnast in program history to do so) and finishing third overall on the event at the 2012 NCAA Championships. In 2014, Newburger set a new NCAA and Ohio State record on pommel horse (16.25) at the Windy City Invitational, earning Big Ten Gymnast of the Week and CGA Gymnast of the Week recognition for his performance. A Nissen-Emery Award finalist, Newburger spent the entirety of the 2014 season as the No. 1 ranked gymnast on pommel horse and closed his gymnastics career with nine individual event titles, having been ranked at No. 1 for 15 weeks, in the Top 5 for 21 weeks and in the Top 10 for 26 weeks.
Academically, in addition to his Capital One honors, Newburger is also a four-time Distinguished Merit Scholar, National Buckeye Scholar and three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. The Austin, Texas, native was also a Big Ten Medal of Honor finalist, and closed his undergraduate career as a four-time Academic All-Big Ten and five-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
Newburger was recently awarded NCAA and Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarships, which will aid him in furthering his studies at Ohio State where he will pursue a Ph.D. in Physics in the fall.
