COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State men’s gymnastics freshman Sean Melton has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. The award marks the fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor for the Orlando, Fla., native, and his fifth Big Ten weekly honor overall.
Melton earned two Top 5 finishes and two Top 10 finishes en route to contributing to the Buckeyes’ highest score of the season (446.15) and upset win over No. 1 Oklahoma on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at St. John Arena. Melton scored a career-high and Ohio State record 16.05 on parallel bars to claim first place, also setting a new NCAA record on the event in the process. In addition, he scored a career-high 15.00 to finish in sixth place on high bar and secure the win for Ohio State. Melton rounded out the day by tying his career-high 15.20 on floor exercise for a fourth-place finish, and scoring a 14.95 on pommel horse for a sixth-place finish.
The Buckeyes have a bye weekend before opening the postseason at the 2014 Big Ten Championships March 28-29 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. The team and all-around competition will be held Friday at 7 p.m. ET while the individual event championships will take place Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.
