COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sean Melton, a member of the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team, was named the College Gymnastics Association NCAA Division I Gymnast of the Week, the organization announced Thursday. The national award is the first CGA weekly honor for the freshman, who also collected his first Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor and second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor earlier this week.
The Orlando, Fla., native was named to the U.S Senior Men’s National Team Feb. 22 at the conclusion of the 2014 USA Gymnastics Winter Cup. Melton finished the meet third overall in the all-around, notching three Top 5 finishes en route to a two-day score of 173.000. He placed third overall on high bar (29.650), fourth overall on vault (30.050) and fifth overall on floor exercise (30.000), also finishing the meet 10th on pommel horse (26.800), 14th on parallel bars (28.100) and 15th on rings (28.400).
Melton will retain his spot on the national squad through the 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships held Aug. 21-24 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The No. 3 Buckeyes resume team competition Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. as they host No. 2 Michigan, No. 8 Iowa, No. 11 Nebraska, Arizona State and the Canadian National Team at the Arnold Challenge at the Columbus Convention Center.
