COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s gymnastics sophomore Jake Martin has been named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week and freshman Sean Melton has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. The award marks the second Big Ten Weekly honor for Martin and the first for Melton.
Martin won two individual event titles and earned five Top 5 finishes overall as the No. 4 Buckeyes posted a second consecutive program record team score (443.300) to defeat No. 8 California Friday night at St. John Arena. The Oviedo, Fla., native posted a career-high 15.800 to claim the individual event title on high bar and a career-high 89.000 to win the all-around title against Cal. In addition, Martin placed second on rings with a career-high 15.150, third on floor exercise with a career-high 14.900 and fourth on parallel bars with a season-high 14.650.
Melton won three individual event titles and also claimed five Top 5 finishes overall Friday night. The Orlando, Fla., native posted a career-high 15.200 to claim the title on floor exercise, a career-high 15.200 to win vault and tied a career-high 15.400 to win parallel bars. Additionally, Melton placed third in the all-around with a career-high 88.550 and fourth on rings with a 14.700.
The Buckeyes have a break from team competition as Martin, Melton, freshman Jake Dastrup and redshirt senior Michael Newburger travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete at the Winter Cup Feb. 20-22. The team returns to action Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. with the Arnold Challenge at the Columbus Convention Center.
