COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team concluded competition at The Cup Invitational at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Saturday, completing its second of three preseason meets and its last meet of 2012.
“We had a rough time during warm-ups and on the first two events, but the team finished strong,” Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov said. “This was a great experience for the freshmen and I am very proud of how the team handled adversities tonight.”
The Buckeyes started the meet on floor exercise, posting an overall team score of 70.900. Sophomore Danny Steiner paced the team in its first event of the night, scoring a 15.000. He was followed by junior Brandän Jones and sophomore Andrew Teal who scored 14.700 and 14.200, respectively.
Redshirt junior Michael Newburger paved the way for Ohio State on pommel horse during the second rotation, taking first place (15.800) to lead the team to an overall score of 72.200. Freshman Jake Martin placed second (15.000) and senior John Laing placed third (14.100).
Ohio State competed on rings in the third rotation. Sophomore Drew Moling took first place for the second consecutive meet, tallying a 14.400. Behind Moling, sophomore Alex Nork scored a 14.300 and redshirt sophomore Nick Tagliaferro posted a 14.200. The Buckeyes scored 70.300 overall as a team.
The Scarlet and Gray posted a team total of 70.800 on vault, behind Teal who posted a 14.700 to take the first spot. Steiner tallied a 14.400 and sophomore Larry Mayer totaled a 14.000 to take second and third place, respectively.
Martin earned a win on parallel bars in the fifth rotation with a team-leading 14.200. Classmate Alex Johnson posted a 13.900 to place second while Moling posted a 13.700 to place third. The team earned a 67.700 overall on the event.
Ohio State competed on high bar in the sixth and final rotation to close out the meet. Martin once again placed first, scoring a team-high 15.700 to lead the team to an overall score of 74.000. Behind Martin, junior Kris Done posted a 15.100 and Jones posted a 14.600.
The Buckeyes have a break in action before returning to competition for their last preseason meet at the Alumni Exhibition at 2 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility.
