Gray Defeats Scarlet in Annual Intrasquad
Dec. 8, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's gymnastics team held its annual Scarlet and Gray Intrasquad, Saturday, at the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility. The Gray team defeated the Scarlet team, 252.000-249.900, to come away with its third win in the last four years. The top 3 scores on each event counted toward the final results.
"I think the intrasquad went well," Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov said. "There are things we need to work on but at least we know where we stand on each event. I was very pleased with the team's attitude and the way they fought from the beginning until the last event and I think that's what it's all about at this moment."
The Scarlet team opened the first rotation on floor exercise before moving to pommel horse for the second rotation. Senior Blaize Monks scored a 14.800 to lead the scarlet squad on floor exercise, while sophomore Alex Nork tallied the team's leading score on pommel horse having earned a 13.000.
The Gray team opened the meet on pommel horse, totaling a 37.700 overall team score behind performances from junior Misha Koudinov and redshirt junior Michael Newburger, who posted scores of 12.800 and 12.500, respectively. During the second rotation on floor exercise, the gray team earned an overall team score of 43.700, behind Koudinov's team-leading 14.800 performance.
With two rotations completed, the Gray squad held a narrow lead having totaled an overall team score of 81.400 in comparison to the Scarlet team's score of 81.100.
The teams competed on rings and vault during the third and fourth rotations. Sophomore Drew Moling led the Scarlet team on both events, posting a meet-best 15.100 on rings while scoring a 14.700 on vault to tie with teammate Evan Reitzel for first place in the event.
