STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Highlighted by redshirt junior Michael Newburger’s national championship on pommel horse, the Ohio State men's gymnastics team had an excellent showing at the 2013 NCAA Individual Event Finals Sunday afternoon at Rec Hall at Penn State. All three qualifiers in Newburger, Danny Steiner and Jeff Treleaven earned All-America honors for the Buckeyes.
Newburger becomes only the second gymnast in program history to win a national championship on pommel horse. Drew Durbin was the first, claiming three consecutive pommel horse titles from 1995-97.
“A lot of hard work went into this, including a lot of hard work from the coaches to get me to this point,” Newburger said. “It doesn’t feel like it’s just me. As soon as I got off the pommel horse, everybody was congratulating me. I couldn’t think about what had happened yet. I wanted to congratulate everybody just as much as they were running up there to congratulate me.”
The Austin, Texas, native is now a two-time All-American on pommel horse, having earned his first career laurel in 2012 after placing third overall on the event.
Treleaven, a native of Glen Ellyn, Ill., earned his second career All-America honor after scoring a 15.125 on vault to finish tied for fifth overall with Stanford’s Sean Senters. Treleaven collected his first All-America laurel on vault in 2011 after finishing third overall.
Steiner, a native of Mesa, Ariz., earned his second consecutive All-America honor on floor exercise after posting a 14.650 to finish seventh overall. He collected his first All-America honor on the event in 2012 with a sixth-place finish.
“I am really proud of the team and the way we finished the season with three All-Americans and an NCAA Pommel Horse Champion,” Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov said. “I’m proud of all of the guys because every one of them is a part of this championship title.”
