COLUMBUS, Ohio – The third-ranked Ohio State men’s gymnastics team captured the 2016 Big Ten Men’s Gymnastics Championship Friday in front of a hometown crowd of 1,579 at St. John Arena. The Buckeyes secured their 13th Big Ten title overall and first since 2007. 

Ohio State totaled 434.450 team points and set the high team score of the night on three events: rings (75.250), vault (73.900) and floor exercise (73.550). Illinois was runner-up with 429.700 points, followed by third-place Minnesota (429.100).

Redshirt sophomore and U.S. Senior National Team Member Sean Melton won his first career Big Ten all-around title – the first for a Buckeye since Randy Monahan in 2004 – with a six-event score of 89.750. Freshman Alec Yoder was runner-up behind his teammate with 87.550 points, followed by bronze medalist Tristan Duran of Minnesota (86.900).

On his way to all-around gold, Melton finished first overall on three events: rings (15.850), parallel bars (15.500) and floor exercise (15.400). He also led Ohio State on high bar, finishing second overall (14.400).

All-Around silver medalist Yoder led the Buckeyes on pommel horse with a second-place score of 15.250. He was fourth on rings with a (15.150), tied for fifth on high bar (14.100) and tied for sixth on floor (14.800).

Sophomore Seth Delbridge posted the top score for the Scarlet and Gray on vault, a personal-best 15.150 that earned him second place overall.

In all, six Buckeyes will compete in event finals tomorrow. Melton and Yoder will compete in four events each, while Delbridge (vault), senior Emeric Quade (floor exercise), freshman Tristan Burke (rings) and senior Alex Johnson (high bar) also battle for gold medals.
