No. 2 Ohio State Wins Three Big Ten Individual Championships

March 29, 2014

LINCOLN, Neb. – Freshman Sean Melton claimed Big Ten Individual Championships on parallel bars and high bar and sophomore Jake Martin claimed a Big Ten Individual Championship on vault as the No. 2 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team closed competition at the 2014 Big Ten Championships Saturday evening at the Bob Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb.

In addition to his titles, Melton was named the 2014 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, becoming the seventh Buckeye in program history to earn the honor and the first since Philip Onorato in 2009.

“I’m very proud of my team and they way they finished the Big Ten Championships,” Ohio State head coach Rustam Sharipov said. “I can’t ask for a better ending. I’m very proud of all of my guys who stepped up and showed that it’s not over until the last competitor. We’re on the right path a week away from the NCAA Championships.”

Melton scored a career-high 15.375 to win his first career Big Ten individual title on high bar before moving on to parallel bars where he scored a 15.600 to win his second. The Orlando, Fla., native also earned a 14.600 on pommel horse to finish in fourth and earn a spot on the podium.

In addition to scoring a 15.300 to earn his first career Big Ten individual title on vault, Martin also scored a 15.100 to place third overall on high bar and a 14.700 to finish eighth overall on floor exercise.

Five other student-athletes represented the Buckeyes on the second day of competition.  Junior Danny Steiner opened the meet as the first gymnast to compete on floor exercise, scoring a 14.675 to finish ninth overall. Behind Steiner, redshirt junior Jeff Treleaven competed second, tallying a 15.000 to finish sixth and earn a spot on the podium.

On pommel horse, redshirt senior Michael Newburger notched a 14.125 to place eighth, while freshman Jake Dastrup scored a 14.725 on parallel bars to finish ninth and sophomore Alex Johnson tallied a 14.925 as the last competitor on high bar to earn a fifth-place finish and place on the podium.

Qualifying sessions will be held Thursday at 1 and 7 p.m. ET, while the team and all-around competition will be held Friday at 7 p.m. ET and the individual event finals will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
