COLUMBUS, Ohio. – Ohio State’s Will Grimmer fired rounds of 66-69 on Monday to qualify for the 118th US Open at Shinnecock Hills next week in Southampton, N.Y.
Playing at the Springfield Sectional qualifier, Grimmer made just two bogies in his 36 holes as he claimed medalist honors in the 65-player field. He made five birdies in his opening round 66 and follow that with two birdies and just one bogey in the afternoon to take the top spot.
The rising senior will be playing in his second US Open as he also qualified out of the Springfield Sectional back in 2014. That year he carded rounds of 77-80 at Pinehurst No. 2 including tying for the most birdies in the opening round with five, but would miss the cut.
Grimmer was a second team All-Big Ten honoree last year as a sophomore and this past season, he was second on the team with a 72.5 stroke average with five top 20s in 11 events.
The US Open gets underway on Thursday, June 14 and will conclude traditionally on Father’s Day June 17.
