COLUMBUS, Ohio - Grant Weaver of the Ohio State men's golf team was named the 2012 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, the league announced Tuesday. Weaver is the first Ohio State newcomer to be given the honor since Chris Smith in 1988.
The Wooster, Ohio, native posted a 72.84 rating on the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. He finished tied for 21st at the Big Ten Championships to lead all Buckeyes with a 14-over 302.
Weaver's best finish this season came at the FAU Spring Break Championships where he came in tied for fourth with a season-low 210. He has been Ohio State's top finisher in three tournaments this season.
Senior Alex Redfield was honored as Ohio State's Sportsmanship Award recipient.
