CINCINNATI, Ohio – What a day for Ohio State junior Daniel Wetterich. The Cincinnati, Ohio native, playing in his hometown, fired rounds of 69-63 which included 11 birdies and two eagles and he holds the 36-hole lead at the Bearcat Invitational at 10-under par.
At one point in the morning round, Wetterich sat at 2-over par through 13 holes. He then got on a run and birdied four-straight holes to finish with a 2-under 69. In the afternoon, he bogeyed the par-4 12th, his third of the round, to slip back to 1-under before making birdies at Nos. 13, 16 and 17 to make the turn at 4-under.
Things then got fun on the final nine. He started it with a birdie at No. 1 and after a bogey at No. 3, he eagled the par-4 fourth. He would birdie the 198-yard par-3 fifth for the second time on the day and then after pars at six and seven, he eagled the par-5 eighth to push into the lead at 9-under. As a 6-foot birdie putt curled home on the par-4 ninth, Wetterich gave a fist-pump to the spectators and he had himself an 8-under 63.
“I got off to a slow start and was 2-over through 13 but those four birdies in a row really got me going,” said Wetterich. “Something clicked and I just started hitting the ball close. I really wasn’t able to keep it going into the second round but on the final nine, it was unreal. Everyone in our group was making putts. We kind of fed off each other. I made about an 18-footer for eagle on four and then hit a 4-iron from just over 220 yards to about nine feet on eight. It was just one of those stretches where it all felt good and I didn’t feel like I was going to miss a shot.”

The 63 bests Wetterich’s previous low round as a Buckeye which was a 68 and it ties his personal low round. He holds a 1-shot lead over Mississippi State’s Tanapat Pichaikool who is at 9-under par.
Will Grimmer and Justin Wick both carded rounds of 71-68 on the day and sit in a tie for 14th at 3-under par. Grimmer stated his morning round with a birdie at his opening hole and would finish with a birdie at his last. He then started the afternoon round with nine-straight pars before carding five birdies on his way home for a 68.
Wick is coming-off a pair of 74s in his collegiate debut last week and he too had himself quite the day. He balanced four bogeys with four birdies in the morning round and then posted five birdies in his afternoon 68.
Caden Orewiler carded matching rounds of 1-over 72 and sits in a tie for 34th at 2-over. Caleb Ramirez notched rounds of 72-75 while Will Voetsch posted a pair of 74s to round out the Buckeye scorers in this unique play-6, count-4 format.
As a team, the Buckeyes got off to a slow start in the morning but got their traction on the second nine and would rally to post a 1-under 283. Buoyed by Wetterich’s sensational round in the afternoon, OSU fired a 13-under 271 to jump up the board to 3rd place. The 13-under was the second-lowest round of the afternoon, trailing only leader Kentucky.
The Buckeyes are in the final grouping Tuesday with Arkansas and Kentucky. The Wildcats are 21-under par followed by Arkansas at 17-under and Ohio State at 14-under. The first tee time for the groups will be at 9:35 a.m. Wetterich is also paired with the two players directly behind him in the individual standings.
