FRENCH LICK, Ind. - The Ohio State men's golf team is off to an ace of a start at the 2014 Big Ten Championships, finding itself in fourth just two strokes back from the leader, Purdue. After 36 holes of competition Friday, the Buckeyes carded a 20-over 596 on the par 72, 7,152-yard Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort.
Headlining the day for the Scarlet and Gray was junior standout Boo Timko. The Girard, Ohio, native, dropped an ace during the second round on the par-3 13th with a 4-iron into the wind. Coupling that with two birdies, he concluded the round with a score of 1-over 73.
Timko's hole-in-one marks the third secured by a Buckeye in the club's last four outings. Freshman Frederik Hammer earned the other two aces at the Boilermaker Invitational (April 20) and Irish Creek Collegiate (April 6), respectively.
Overall, Timko ranks in a fourth-place tie among individual competitors (2-over 146). He recorded a 1-over 73 in the opening round, notching an eagle on the par-4 11th.
Not to be overshadowed, sophomore Tee-k Kelly put together a strong opening day performance as well. Kelly, who is also tied for fourth with a 2-over 146 total, came through in the second with a 1-under 71 showing. Five birdies over 36 holes aided the Wheaton, Ill. product in his pursuit.
Junior Logan Jones was consistent for the Buckeyes, tallying a 7-over 151 for 19th in the standings. After carding a 4-over 76 in the first round, Jones improved by a stroke in the second to post a 3-over 75. He earned four birdies on the day.
In their first appearance at Big Tens, freshmen Addison Coll and Hammer got their footing with 10-over 154 for 34th and 13-over 157 for 50th performances, respectively. Cole put forth his best scoring effort in the second with a 4-over 76, dropping in two birdies on the back nine. Hammer also improved significantly in the second, posting a 3-over 75 with two birdies.
The third round of the Big Ten championships begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The Buckeyes will tee off between 9:40 and 10:12 a.m.
