COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's golf team opened its spring slate Friday winning one of two contests at the Big Ten Match Play Championships. Taking place in Bradenton, Fla. on the par 72, 7,474-yard course at The Concession Golf Club, the tournament paired the fifth-seeded Buckeyes against Nebraska and Iowa in first round and quarterfinal play.

Going down to the wire, Ohio State's opening round versus Nebraska failed to disappoint. The Buckeyes pulled through a 3-2 victory over the Cornhuskers with a 1-up individual win from freshman standout Frederik Hammer.

Hammer's match was back-and-fourth until the 14th hole, which he birdied to take a 1-up lead. In all, Hammer won six holes in the round with two scores under par.

Also, recording wins for the Scarlet and Gray were Boo Timko and Tee-k Kelly. Timko ended his match 5-up with three holes remaining. The Buckeye junior acquired a lead on the sixth hole and never relinquished. On the other hand, Kelly affirmed his position from the beginning, taking a 1-up lead on the first hole of play. He ended the match 3&2, punching in three birdies in the process.

Buckeyes Michael Bernard and Clark Engle also recorded scores. Bernard fell 4&3 in the opening round, while Engle faltered 3&2. Engle totaled two birdies in his match.

With the opening round win, Ohio State advanced to play fourth-seeded Iowa in quarterfinals of the championship bracket.

Timko and Kelly were victorious once again, as the Buckeyes went 2-2-1 overall against the Hawkeyes. With four birdies, Timko claimed his match 5&3. Kelly defeated his opponent with a 1-up finish over 18 holes of play.

Engle concluded his match in tie, with each opponent taking five holes. The Buckeye freshman went 1-up on hole 17, but was unable to hold on after finishing 1-over par on 18.

Picking up losses for Ohio State were Hammer and newcomer Addison Coll. Hammer was defeated in 13 holes after falling 7-up. Taking it to 17 holes, Coll dropped his match 3&1.

Ohio State returns to the course Saturday morning and faces ninth-seeded Indiana in consolation play. The Buckeyes are scheduled to begin at 8:10 a.m.
