Sam Hubbard Earns 1st-Team Academic All-America Honors

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sam Hubbard, Ohio State’s talented sophomore defensive end, has been named today a first-team 2016 Academic All-American. He is the 29th Buckeye to earn first-team Academic All-America honors and the 52nd Buckeye all-time to be recognized for academic honors as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Hubbard is a junior academically and is carrying a 3.61 overall grade point average while majoring in finance. The Cincinnati native and Archbishop Moeller High School graduate has previously been named a two-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree and a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.

A 12-game starter along the defensive line this season for the Buckeyes, Hubbard ranks second among the Ohio State linemen with 41 tackles and second with four quarterback hurries. He has recorded 7.0 tackles for losses totaling 38 yards, including 3.0 quarterback sacks for losses totaling 28 yards. Earlier this week he was named honorable mention all-Big Ten Conference for his fine play.

Ohio State has produced four Academic All-Americans in the last three years, including first-team honorees Jacoby Boren and Jack Willoughby in 2015.

Hubbard is the 10th player coached by Urban Meyer to earn Academic All-America accolades, a list that includes Utah DB Morgan Scalley (2003 and 2004), Utah QB Alex Smith (2004), Florida QB Tim Tebow (2007, 2008 and 2009), Boren (2014 and 2015), Willoughby (2015) and now Hubbard.
