COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Buckeyes got after it Saturday in Ohio Stadium during their annual jersey scrimmage - the battle to see what side of the ball will get to wear the coveted scarlet jerseys. Though no score was kept, the winners will be decided after film study to see what unit was most deserving.
"We're going to hold all judgments until we watch and evaluate ourselves as far as coaches and players," head coach Luke Fickellsaid. "But I saw some good things. Most importantly I saw a competitive nature that I knew we had, but you always want to see it (out on the field).
"We weren't focused on just the score. I didn't want that to affect how they played or how we called things. That was the biggest thing. It's about us. We don't care who wears the jerseys. But we're definitely going to take a look and measure things and it's going to be on the turnovers and the toughness factor, and that's how well you run the football and how well you stop the run."
Senior Joe Bauserman and freshman Braxton Miller took a majority of the snaps at quarterback with the first unit. Unofficial stats from the booth showed Bauserman with 120 yards on 7-of-13 with a 10-yard TD pass to freshman tight end Jeff Heuerman. Miller threw for 126 yards on 9-of-17 passing with two TD passes, including a 58-yarder to redshirt sophomore Chris Fields. Miller also carried seven times for 53 yards (3 sacks).
Defensively, senior linebacker Andrew Sweatled the way with nine tackles, including 4.0 TFL, one sack and one pass break-up.
"I think we played physical," Fickell added. "I'd like to see more emotion. But I think that just comes with camp. The emotional side of things sometimes is where the energy is lost. But it wasn't because of a lack of competitiveness. That's the No. 1 thing I was looking for to see how competitive we would be."
Another bright side came on the special teams came from sophomore Drew Basilwho was 6-of-6 on field goals - his longest of the day a 41-yarder.
