COLUMBUS, Ohio - Fall camp for the Ohio State football program is officially winding down. The two practices on Friday, Aug. 17, at the team's Ackerman Road field represent the final two-a-day practice day this year. The Buckeyes will practice one more time at Ackerman on Saturday morning.

A handful of assistant coaches met briefly with members of the media following Friday's a.m. session. Some post practice thoughts included:

  • Defensive line coach Mike Vrabel saying he'll play his best players. "If I think I've got four really good guys, and if they don't get tired, they'll play. In the game where I came from [the NFL], the best players play."
  • Running backs coach Stan Drayton liking what he has seen in Carlos Hyde. "Jordan Hall proved himself in the spring and he will be an integral part of our team once we get him back. And Carlos Hyde has stepped up his game. He's trying to be a leader. He's answered the bell. He's really trying to be a physical player for us."

Meyer and Belichick
Mike Vrabel, who spent eight seasons playing for coach Bill Belichick in New England, was asked to compare his current boss, coach Urban Meyer, and his former coach.

"They want a prepared football team [knowing] what you will face in the game," Vrabel said. "They each can and will do whatever it takes to get prepared for the game."

Vrabel said the two coaches are also similar in their attention to detail, their competitive excellence and in the fact that neither will put a player out on the field who isn't ready.

Black Stripe Update
Five Buckeye rookies have had their black stripe removed off their helmets by their big brother: 1. DB Devan Bogard (Orhian Johnson); 2. DL Noah Spence (Michael Bennett); 3. DL Tommy Schutt (Garrett Goebel); 4. OL Taylor Decker (Jack Mewhort); 5. DL Adolphus Washington (Johnathan Hankins).

Getting the black stripe removed is a signal that a freshman is ready to become a full-fledged Buckeye. Each freshman is assigned a big brother who is considered a leader on the team and who will help the younger player get through the rigors of fall camp while teaching what it takes to be an Ohio State Buckeye. It is a program coach Urban Meyer has implemented throughout his head coaching career, beginning in 2001 at Bowling Green.
