Ohio State Starts Fall Camp Practices
Aug. 5, 2013
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State Buckeyes opened their 2013 fall camp season with a pair of practices at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center's first-class practice facility: the Harmon Family Football Park. Second-year head coach Urban Meyer and his coaching staff worked with 35 freshmen (and a few inexperienced upperclassmen) at an 8:45 a.m. practice and then returned to the fields for a 3:05 p.m. practice with the veterans.
It was a glorious day for practice. At 2 p.m. it was a San Diego-like 74 degrees under hazy sunshine, some whispers of clouds and at times, Lake Superior-blue skies.
Some numbers: the 105-man roster at fall camp includes 17 offensive linemen, 16 defensive linemen, 14 receivers and 12 linebackers within the four largest position groups.
When the players arrived at the Woody this morning they had breakfast in the player's lounge and then on the way to their locker room they walked by their new Gatorade Fuel Bar, which wasn't completed when they left for their short break on Wednesday. The fuel bar features all stainless steel cabinets and appliances, an eight-stool seating area, five leather recliners, two rather large HD flat screen televisions and ample display and storage space for nutrition/energy bars and sports fuel drinks, shakes and thirst quenchers. Ahhhhh!
Johnston practices with veterans
Cameron Johnston, the punter from "down under" (Geelong, Australia), did not take part in the freshmen drills in the morning. He practiced with the rest of the team's specialists in the afternoon in order to start receiving snaps from the team's long snappers - senior George Makridis and sophomore Bryce Haynes - under the watchful eyes of special team's coordinator Kerry Coombs and coach Urban Meyer.
Misc. notes and good stuff...
The offense wears scarlet practice jerseys with white numbers; the defense wears white jerseys with scarlet numbers ... Antonio Underwood continues to rehabilitate his knee (spring surgery) and will not take part in fall camp practices ... Four new walk-ons were added to the team in time for the first practice: WR Jeff Greene, a transfer from Georgia Tech who will sit out this season and have two seasons of eligibility remaining; freshman LB Aaron Mawhirter, from Sandusky, Ohio; OL Ben Moffitt, a freshman from Shelby Township, Mich.; and freshman WR Joe Ramstetter, from Cincinnati ... the entire team will practice for the next three days at 9:30 a.m. at the Harmon Family Football Park.
