A fine spring quarter in the classroom
June 19, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio - In addition to the good news last week that the Ohio State football program received a public recognition award from the NCAA for having an Academic Progress Rate among the Top 10 percent of all FBS programs, the team had a fine spring quarter in the classroom with a combined team grade point average (GPA) of 2.88. This figure represents the highest GPA for the football team in the past 10 quarters. The last time the team's quarterly GPA was higher was after the 2009 autumn quarter when it was 2.90.
The football team's grade point average is even higher when considering only those student-athletes who will be members of the 2012 team. The 2.88 average is the total for everyone in the program - medical redshirts, 2011 seniors still completing course work, etc. The players on the current roster who will be on the field this fall had a combined grade point average of 2.95 this spring. The last Ohio State team to top that average heading into a fall camp was the 2007 team that posted a 3.02 GPA after the summer quarter.
Spring marked the second consecutive quarter for Coach Urban Meyer's program to increase its team GPA.
"Our players and staff really attacked the spring quarter academically, especially the second half of it, like we would the second half of a game," Meyer said. "I was impressed with everyone's effort to finish strong. Overall, the team performed very well in the classroom."
Here's more good news about this spring's good grades:
