Roby & Shazier on Lott IMPACT List
May 21, 2013
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State junior defensive standouts Bradley Roby and Ryan Shazier have each been selected to the 2013 Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list, an award presented annually by the Pacific Club of Newport Beach, Calif., to the player who make the biggest impact on his team both on and off the field.
A total of 42 student-athletes from 37 schools are represented on the initial IMPACT - the acronym stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity - list. Ohio State is one of five schools to have two players selected to the list.
Roby, a first-team All-American by ESPN.com and all-Big Ten pick, led the nation in 2012 with 19 passes defended, including 17 PBUs, which tied a school record, and two interceptions. He was also one of 15 semifinalists for the Thorpe Award. His impact games included recording four PBUs in the win at Penn State and a two-interception game vs. Nebraska, including a momentum shifting "pick six" in the 63-38 victory.
Roby was the only defensive player in the nation to score touchdowns three different ways this season (recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone vs. Miami; recovered a blocked punt in the end zone vs. Indiana; and the interception return vs. Nebraska). He also blocked a punt in the win at Michigan State and finished third on the team with 63 total tackles.
Shazier, named all-Big Ten by voting media, had a breakout season from his linebacker spot, leading the Big Ten in TFL with 17 while finishing second with 115 total tackles. He also ranked in a tie for fourth in forced fumbles (3), seventh in sacks (5.0) and eighth in passes defended (12).
Shazier, who was named Big Ten defensive player of the week twice, recorded six 10-plus tackle games with a season-high 14.0 in the win over Illinois. But no game was bigger than his 8.0-tackle performance at Penn State, which included 2.0 sacks for minus-22 yards and a 17-yard interception return early in the third quarter that broke a 7-7 tie and sparked the Buckeyes to victory. He also had a huge forced fumble at the goal line - on fourth and inches - against Wisconsin in addition to 12 tackles.
Notre Dame's Manti Te'o was selected as the 2012 Lott IMPACT Trophy winner. Ohio State's James Laurinaitis won the award in 2008 while defensive lineman John Simon was a semifinalist for the award the past two seasons.
