Happy Birthday Coach Hayes
Feb. 14, 2013
COLUMBUS, Ohio- Today is the 100th anniversary of Woody Hayes' birthday. Happy Birthday Coach Hayes!
The heart and soul of the Ohio State football program between 1951-78, Coach Hayes guided the Buckeyes to a record of 205-61-10, 13 Big Ten Conference championships, a 16-11-1 record against "that team up north" and five national championships: 1954 (Associated Press), 1957 (UPI and Football Writers), 1961 (Football Writers), 1968 (Consensus) and 1970 (National Football Foundation).
Hayes was also known for his love of the university and inspired hundreds of thousands with his passion for winning and his love of military history.
In his commencement speech to Ohio State's March 1986 graduates, Hayes urged them to "pay forward," his motivational phrase about the importance of taking public and personal responsibility. The idea has sparked numerous university groups dedicated to public service and giving back.
A weeklong celebration of Coach Hayes, and the impact he and his wife, Anne, had on the university, included the placement Wednesday of an eight-foot tall, 800-pound sculpture of Coach Hayes at the entrance to the football facility named after him. The bronze statue was created by artist Alan Cottrill of Zanesville, Ohio.
The celebration continues with the Woody and Anne Hayes Tribute Event, a celebration dinner at 7 p.m. Feb. 15, at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Proceeds from the event, chaired by son Steven Hayes, emceed by Archie Griffin and featuring Brent Musburger, will go to funds at Ohio State that represent Anne and Woody's favorite causes.
