USATSPI: Ohio State vs. Purdue - 11/02/13
2014 Season (Sophomore): Bell started 14 games at one of the safety positions for the College Football Playoff national champion Buckeyes and was named honorable mention all-Big Ten Conference ... he was second on the team in tackles with 92, an impressive total that represents a 12-year high for an Ohio State safety, or since Mike Doss had 107 for the 2002 national champion Buckeyes ... Doss also had 94 tackles in 2000 and, to this date, he remains the only Ohio State safety this century to record more tackles in a single season than Bell's 92 in 2014 ... only eight players nationally topped Bell's 13-year Ohio State best six interceptions (Derek Ross had seven in 2001) ... Bell ranked third in the Big Ten with .40 interceptions per game and he also ranked 11th in the Big Ten with 12 passes defensed (six interceptions and pass break-ups, respectively) ... Bell had seven or more tackles in nine games, including a career-best nine vs. Michigan and a career-high eight solo tackles vs. Alabama ... had interceptions vs. Virginia Tech, Penn State, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and Alabama ... had a quarterback sack of Oregon's Marcus Mariota in the College Football Playoff national championship game, part of a six-tackle evening.
2013 Season (Freshman): Bell was on the Ohio State two-deep chart throughout the 2013 season as a true freshman back-up at the nickel position ... his season-long hard work and efforts paid off when he was awarded with the start at nickel in the Discover Orange Bowl vs. Clemson ... he made one of the plays of the game vs. the Tigers, tipping and then intercepting a Taj Boyd pass at the Ohio State 1 in the second quarter of a game Clemson led at the time, 14-9 ... Bell also had seven tackles -- all of them solo stops -- in the Orange Bowl ... he finished the season having played in all 14 games and he was credited with 19 tackles ... he had three solo stops vs. Penn State ... following the season Bell missed most of the 2014 spring drills with a minor knee injury.
More on Vonn: An exclamation point on Ohio State's Class of 2013, Under Armour All-American Vonn Bell announced on National Letter of Intent signing day that he would be a Buckeye ... a five-star prospect by Rivals, Scout and 247Sports, Bell was one of the top 30 players in the nation with overall rankings of No. 25 by Scout, No. 29 by 247Sports and No. 32 by Rivals ...
