Coach Urban Meyer gives players plenty of opportunities to show up and compete
Ohio State Overview:Russell Doup is a fine student, athlete and young man who is in his fifth season with the program after initially walking on to the team in the fall of 2010 ... five years as a walk-on says plenty, and Doup deserves credit for working hard to devote time, effort and spirit to the football program without any guaranty of playing time ... and the really cool thing is that he has now gotten into a game as a Buckeye ... indeed, he played on special teams and at safety during the Buckeyes' win over Florida A&M in 2013 ... and then the p.r. guys made Doup do some interviews ... Doup initially walked-on to the team as a left-footed kicking specialist, but was moved over to play safety during the 2012 season ... he has since bulked up about 15 pounds to his current weight ... the pronunciation of his name - it sounds like "wow" with a "d" and a "p" and not "oooh" like soup - caused a minor twitter trend early in his career when an official player pronunciation guide incorrectly listed it as "Doup like soup" ... Doup is majoring in marketing and interned in May of 2014 at Berger Financial in the Short North district of Columbus.
More on Russell: Doup played football (for coach Gary Keller), basketball and baseball at Mt. Vernon H.S. ... his basketball and baseball teams won OCC championships ... he was team captain of the basketball team ... he was also a member of the National Honor Society and student council ... he is the son of Alice and Kelly Doup ... he has one sister, Katie, a producer for Columbus' CBS affiliate, 10-TV.
