Ohio State Overview: Ron Tanner practiced and played four seasons with the Buckeyes, including a red-shirt year in 2011, but a chronic foot injury has forced him to give up the game ... this coming after Tanner had earned three Varsity O letters as a Buckeye by contributing as a key special teams player and as a backup safety ... he was considered one of the best and purest tacklers on the team and it shows: he has made 23 career tackles with virtually all of them on special teams units ... he played in a total of 36 games ... he is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree majoring in sports industry.
2014 Season (Junior): Tanner was averaging nearly 20 plays per game through the first four games of the season, but a foot injury limited his play for the rest of the year ... he ended up playing in 11 games for the College Football Playoff national champions and earned his third Varsity O letter ... he was in on eight tackles, including six solo tackles.
2013 Season (Sophomore): Tanner played in all 14 games for the Buckeyes on special teams and in five games as a safety on defense ... he recorded the first interception of his career in the season opener vs. Buffalo ... he had a personal-best four tackles in the win at Illinois ... he had a career-best 34 plays vs. San Diego State, including 20 on defense, and he had a Big Ten-best 25 plays vs. Illinois and another 24 vs. Penn State.
2012 Season (Freshman): Tanner earned his first letter as a red-shirt freshman after playing in 11 games and participating on 58 special teams plays ... he was credited with two solo tackles on the season ... he was a member of the 2011 recruiting class and he red-shirted the 2011 season as an Ohio State true freshman.
More on Ron: Tanner was a talented free safety/quarterback at Eastmoor Academy under the direction of coach Jim Miranda ... he had 104 tackles, three interceptions and 15 pass break-ups as a senior ... he also passed for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns ... he was named all-city, all-central district and all-metro ... selected to Offense-Defense Bowl and Team USA vs. The World games ... also lettered in basketball and baseball ... Ohio all-academic, honor roll and National Honor Society member ... is the son of Kim and Ronald Tanner.
