Football vs. Kent State

Ohio State hosted Kent State on Saturday, September 13, 2014 in Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State Overview: After earning a medical red-shirt year in 2015 when he broke his leg in Week 5, Corey Smith is in his fourth year with the Ohio State football program and is a sixth-year student … he worked on rehabilitating his injury the past year and is expecting a full return to the field this fall camp … meanwhile, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Spring 2016 in African American and African studies … he is the first junior college prospect to sign with Ohio State since Larry Grant signed out of Community College of San Francisco in 2006 … Smith red-shirted the 2013 season with the Buckeyes and then saw considerable playing time for the Buckeyes during their national championship season of 2014 (played in 14 of 15 games) … enters the 2016 campaign with 104 career catches for 1,488 yards and 11 touchdowns, including 25 catches for 317 yards wearing Ohio State’s scarlet and gray … also is a valuable asset on special teams, particularly kickoff coverage.

2015 Season (Medical Redshirt): Smith played in four of the team’s first five games before suffering his leg injury against Indiana … had caught five passes for 62 yards up until that point … earned a medical red-shirt season after missing the final eight games.

2014 Season (Junior): Smith played in 14 games for the College Football Playoff national champions and earned his first Varsity O letter ... he had 20 receptions for 255 yards and a 12.8 yards per reception average ... caught a personal-best (as a Buckeye) four passes for 44 yards in the win over Maryland ... had his long catch of the season -- 47 yards -- in the national title game win over Oregon, part of a two-catch, 76-yard receiving game ... had at least one reception in 11 of his 14 games, including three catches for 28 yards in the win over Michigan and two catches for 30 years in the Big Ten championship game win over Wisconsin.

More on Corey: Smith, from Akron Buchtel High School, played on an unbeaten (10-0) Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College team in 2011 before the college discontinued the program after 80 years … Smith had 28 receptions for 438 yards and two touchdowns for Grand Rapids … he then played for Buddy Stephens at East Mississippi C.C., located in Scooba, Miss., in 2012 … he recorded 51 receptions for 733 yards and nine touchdowns for the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges’ north division champion … caught 11 passes for 113 yards vs. Northwest C.C. and seven passes for 158 yards vs. Southwest C.C. … his team won first eight games before dropping final two games of the season … named the No. 9 junior college prospect in the nation by 247Sports and the No. 3 receiver … is the son of Erika Smith.
