Ohio State Overview: Joe Burger came to Ohio State as a preferred walk-on, joining the team with the rest of the 2012 freshman class in June 2012 ... he is a true junior, but a sophomore in eligibility, and is in his third season with the program ... after working primarily as a scout team member as a true freshman in 2012, he got into six games in 2013 and earned his first Varsity O letter ... when injuries sidelined a couple players, Burger started at linebacker in the game at Illinois ... he had his season-best nine plays from scrimmage on defense against San Dieo State ... Burger is an academic-all-Big Ten Conference honoree and an OSU Scholar-Athlete majoring in engineering ... he interned in May 2014 with industrial engineering firm TP Mechanical.
More on Joe: Burger was a 2011 La Salle H.S. team captain and was named first-team Division I all-state by the Associated Press after recording 103 tackles with five sacks and an interception ... his work in the classroom, in the community and on the field led to his winning the 2012 "That's My Boy Award," presented by the National Football Foundation and the Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association ... he played for coach Tom Grippa ... Burger is the youngest of four boys in his family ... parents are Felicia and Bob Burger ... his father walked on to the Notre Dame football team and eventually earned a scholarship ... brother, Bobby, also walked on to the Notre Dame team, as did two uncles ... two other brothers are Chris and John ... was the vice-president of LaSalle's National Honor Society and held a seat on the student council.
