Homestand Runs To Jan. 2
Ohio State has played three home games this season to date but began a run of eight-consecutive home games vs. Northern Kentucky Dec. 1. The Buckeyes will play seven games at Value City Arena in December before the Big Ten Conference opener Jan. 2 vs. Nebraska on the home court.
Buckeyes on Home Win Streak
In the nine seasons Thad Matta has coached the Buckeyes, his teams are 72-2 in Columbus vs. non-conference opponents. Ohio State has won the last 35 non-Big Ten games in Columbus after falling to West Virginia Dec. 27, 2008. In the 74 non-league games, Ohio State has averaged nearly 90 points a game while giving up just over 63 (+26.4 ppg.). The largerst margin of victory was 63 points vs. St. Francis (Pa.) Nov. 28, 2009 (110-47). The smallest were two-point wins vs. No. 21 LSU 78-76 Dec. 31, 2006 and vs. No. 16 Tennessee (68-66) Jan. 13, 2007. In the 72 wins, eight have been by fewer than 10 points. Ohio State has won its last 11 non-conference home games by 20 or more points.
The Long Beach State Series
The 49ers of Long Beach State University and Ohio State have met just once previously, a 93-86 win for the Buckeyes Nov. 26, 1987, at the Lobo Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. Against members of the Big West Conference, Ohio State is 7-1 all-time. Three wins have come against California-Santa Barbara. Ohio State owns two wins vs. California-Davis and lone victories against both California State-Northridge and LBSU. The Buckeyes have not faced Big West members Cal Poly, Cal St. Fullerton, Pacific, Cal-Irvine or Cal-Riverside. Thad Matta is 1-0 against Big West members, a 68-51 win over UC-Santa Barbara March 19, 2012 in Milwaukee, Wis., in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
A Look at the 49ers
Dan Monson, who previously coached at Minnesota, has Long Beach State off to a 3-5 start this season. The 49ers opened the season with a win over North Alabama then fell in the next three outings at Southern California, at home vs. North Carolina and at Arizona. LBSU then won the next two games at Fresno State and Loyola Marymount before a rematch loss to Fresno State. The 49ers played at Syracuse Thursday fell to the Orange, 84-53. Senior guard/forward James Ennis leads the team in scoring with 15.6 points and 7.8 rebounds. Mike Caffey, a sophomore guard, contributes 10.5 ppg. and 4.8 assists per outing.
Buckeyes Among National Leaders
In the recent release of national statistics (Dec. 3), Ohio State ranks among the Top 15 in assist-to-turnover ratio (13th/+1.46) and fewest turnovers per game (4th/9.3 per game). Individually, junior DeshaunThomas is No. 20 in scoring with 21.0 ppg. Classmate Aaron Craft is No. 16 in assist-to-turnover ratio at +3.71 and sophomore Shannon Scott is No. 5 at +6.0.
Thomas Reaches 1,000, Craft Next
Juniors Deshaun Thomas and Aaron Craft both could join Ohio State's 1,000-point club this season. Thomas reached the milestone with 16 points at Duke Nov. 28. He has 1,023 for his career, good for the No. 47 spot all-time at Ohio State. Craft is 327 points away. Thomas averages 12.5 points over his career after contributing 15.9 points a game as a sophomore. Craft has averaged just over eight points a game over 82 career outings. He averaged 8.8 ppg. as a sophomore.
Craft Closing on Steals Record
Six games into his junior season, Aaron Craft is closing on the Ohio State all-time steals record with 181 to date, good for No. 3 all-time in Ohio State history. David Lighty (2007-11) is No. 2 with 191. Jay Burson (1986-89) is Ohio State's career leader with 204.
Thomas close to Joining 1,000/500 Club
A total of 24 Ohio State players have scored 1,000 or more points to go with 500 career rebounds. Deshaun Thomas (1,023 career points) will be the next to join the club with 121 rebounds. Jared Sullinger was the last to reach the milestone with 1,282 career points and 717 career rebounds. Thad Matta has coached five of the players on the all-time list. William Buford (1,990/666), Terence Dials (1,566/876), Evan Turner (1,517/683), David Lighty (1,458/577) and Sullinger were added to the list during Matta's tenure.
