Craft, Thomas Named to Wooden, Naismith Lists
The preseason Top 50 watch lists for both the 2013 Wooden Award and the 2013 Naismith Player of the Year includes Deshaun Thomas and Aaron Craft, both juniors on the Ohio State men's basketball team. The 36th annual Wooden Award ceremony will take place at the men's Final Four Weekend (April 6-8) in Atlanta. Ohio State has been well represented among finalists for the Wooden Award over the last several years. Greg Oden was a finalist in 2007. Evan Turner was the 2010 Wooden Award winner and Jared Sullinger was a finalist in both 2011 and 2012. The Naismith Men's College Player of the Year Award will be handed out April 7 in Atlanta as well.
Buckeyes Make 10+ 3s in Opener
Ohio State opened the season shooting 12 of 20 from 3-point range vs. Albany, marking the 80th time in Ohio State history the Buckeyes have made 10 or more 3s in a game. Ohio State hit double digits once in 2011-12 (10 of 20 vs. Northwestern, 12/28/11). The Buckeyes have won their last 17 games in which the team connected on 10 or more from long range. The last loss was Jan. 3, 2010 at Michigan. Ohio State knocked down 10 of 32 3s in that game. Thad Matta's Ohio State teams are 54-9 when reaching double digits from 3-point range. Opponents are 37-58 all-time against Ohio State and 9-32 during Matta's tenure when making 10 or more treys.
Rhode Island Series
Ohio State and Rhode Island have never met in basketball prior to the matchup in the 2013 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic. Ohio State has been successful against the Atlantic 10 Conference over the years. The Buckeyes are 62-23 all-time vs. the A-10. Butler has faced Ohio State the most from the Atlantic 10. The Buckeyes are 31-10 vs. the Bulldogs. Thad Matta, while coaching at Xavier, won all three meetings vs. Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
A Look at the Rams (0-2)
Rhode Island enters the game with the Buckeyes with an 0-2 record, losing to Norfolk State 67-55 Nov. 9 and 69-50 at Virginia Tech Nov. 12. Senior forward Nikola Malesevic and junior guard Xavier Munford lead the Rams offensively, each scoring 16.0 points per game. Malesevic leads the team with an average of 6.5 rebounds a game.
The Washington (1-1) Series
Ohio State and Washington first played in December of 1938 in Seattle. The series began with the Huskies winning the first five games, the first four at Washington and the fifth in Columbus in 1947. The teams have split the last six meetings to give Ohio State an overall 3-8 record. The teams have not met since 1972, a 67-63 loss for the Buckeyes, who were ranked No. 10 against the unranked Huskies. The last time the teams met on a neutral court was Dec. 27, 1961 when the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes downed the unranked Huskies 59-49 at the L.A. Holiday Classic in California. Against teams currently representing the Pacific 12 Conference, Ohio State is 36-36. The last time Ohio State played a Pac-12 foe was against California Nov. 20, 2009 at the 2K Sports Classic in New York. the No. 15 Buckeyes defeated the No. 13 Bears 76-70. Thad Matta is 2-3 vs. the Pac-12. He is 2-0 vs. California, 0-2 vs. Arizona and 0-1 vs. Stanford. Washington enters the weekend 1-1 after a home win vs. Loyola 85-63 to open the season and a loss to Albany Tuesday 63-62 in Seattle. Ohio State defeated Albany 82-60 Nov. 11.
The Seton Hall (2-0) Series
The Buckeyes are 3-2 all-time vs. the Pirates of Seton Hall. The teams have not met since Dec. 20, 2002 in New Jersey. The Pirates won that game 75-59. The first game in the series was on a neutral court when the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes downed Seton Hall 97-57 in the ECAC Holiday Tournament in New York. Ohio State owns a record of 63-41 all-time against teams currently in the Big East Conference. Thad Matta is 9-2 all-time vs. Big East teams over his career, The last two wins of the 2011-12 season were against Big East foes in the 2012 NCAA East Regional in Boston. The Buckeyes defeated Cincinnati 81-66 March 22 and then Syracuse in the regional finals 77-70 March 24. The Pirates enter the weekend 2-0 with home wins over UMKC 75-36 and Norfolk State 78-65.
